How to Struggle with Potential Data Leakage

July 6, 2015

Recent in-depth researches provided by scientists of the University of Cambridge show that Factory Reset on Android smartphones leaves behind enough data for the encryption key to be recovered. That means that there is a possibility to restore essential data even when you believe that your phone is completely sanitized.

A package of experiments shows that it is possible to recover all conversation details including emails, text messages and chats on all devices with flawed Factory Reset. Who can imagine what will happen to the bank accounts and business data when information like banking credentials taken from such a device will fall in hands of attackers?

Taking into consideration the number of traded Android devices the flaws in secure deletion of data becomes a serious problem that requires a fast and effective solution. And here are some possible ways to improve a situation:

  • Enable Full Disc Encryption before using a new device to supplement more enhanced logical sanitization;
  • Use a recent eMMC with support for digital sanitization.
